Pilot Training Check-In: Are You On Track?

At Desert Wings Flight School at Falcon Field in Mesa, we encourage students to conduct a review of their aviation progress. Professional pilots constantly evaluate their performance, training objectives, and long-term goals. Student pilots should do the same. Ask yourself, are you where you expected to be in your flight training journey?

Review Your Original Goal

When you started training, what was your objective?

Was it:

  • To earn a Private Pilot Certificate?
  • To begin a professional pilot career?
  • To fly recreationally?
  • To work toward Commercial Pilot training?
  • To become an airline pilot?

Is this still your goal or has it evolved? Goals change. If yours has, speak to your instructor and let them support you to ensure your training plan still aligns with your objectives.

Many students who begin pursuing a Private Pilot Certificate eventually decide to pursue:

If you've discovered that aviation is more than just a hobby, now is the ideal time to create a long-term roadmap for your career path.

Private Pilot Milestones: Where Should You Be?

If you're working toward your Private Pilot Certificate, ask yourself:

Have you completed:

☐ Solo flight?

☐ Cross-country training?

☐ Night flying requirements?

☐ Checkride preparation?

If not, why? Delays don't necessarily indicate problems. Life, finances, work schedules, and weather all affect flight training progression. The important thing is maintaining momentum; work with your instructor to ensure your momentum matches your goals.

Are You Flying Frequently Enough?

One of the biggest predictors of success in pilot training is consistency.

Students who fly 2-3 times per week minimum, study between lessons and prepare well before each flight often complete their training more efficiently than those who train sporadically.

At Falcon Field Mesa, Arizona's excellent weather allows students to maintain continuity throughout the year.

The Best Pilots Regularly Reassess

Pilot training isn't a race. It's a process of continuous improvement.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What am I doing well?
  • What is slowing my progress?
  • What do I need to change going forward?

Whether you're preparing for your first solo or planning your Commercial Pilot Certificate, regular progress reviews help keep your goals achievable. Our instructors are here to help you answer these questions, to assess your progress, and work with you to ensure you meet your pilot goals.
